Film questionnaire rough cut 3 analysis

Rough cut

We had another questionnaire for our rough cut, to gain feedback before we edited and adjusted this to make our final film. We decided that in order for our film to make more sense after the feedback we received we needed a voice over from Damion in order to explain what's happening in the film and what he's doing.

The results matched to our expectations mostly due to the ages of the people who answered being 17-20 liking the story line, which is good as it's our main audience, teenagers.

Most rated the rough cut as a 12, with 1 person saying 15 which is close enough to our expected film certificate.

However with varied results for where they would expect to see the film, Youtube was said once and netflix twice, which could be an aim for us if we ever decided to make more films in the future. It also tells us our film looks quite professional if people would expect to watch it on a website like this one.

The Forgotten Truth Rough Cut Analysis

This is the rough cut of our film The Forgotten Truth. So far we are happy with the background music of the film as we think it fits in well with what's happening with the film. I think that we have a good amount of shots so that it makes it more interesting to watch and also, the rhythm of the editing changes with the pace of the film to create a more on edge effect for the audience. I think the main weakness of the film would be the clarity of the storyline, we are yet to add a voice over to the film which will hopefully improve the storyline. We are also going to change all of the memory scenes to black and white to show that they are all what Damian is remembering and that Lilly is not really there. We have one of the memory scenes in the cafe where we put a pink filter over it. We did this to make the scene look more romantic and show Damian's feelings for Lilly before he turned mentally ill, but I think we will turn that scene black and white as well so that the film is more consistent. We are hoping to improve the sound effects during the death scene as we got them off of the internet and I don't think they fit in with the shots well. We will do this by recording our own punching and kicking sounds.

Damion's death: how it was done

In order to make Damion's death look as realistic as possible, we researched videos on how to fake hang a character in a film, which I mentioned in an earlier post. We filmed Dale folding a blanket, rolling it together and then fastening it over a bar on the ceiling. As we  wanted to make the scene as safe as possible, a member of our group held the blanket so it looked like it was fastened to the bar, as we decided it was the safest option. After this Dale stood on a chair and we filmed him making it fall over, making it look like he walked off it when we finally cut it together. Then Dale sat on a chair and moved his legs as though they were dangling, this gave the effect of a hanging. It made our film creepy and realistic, scaring the audience as it's quite an unnerving scene to watch.

This idea came from the film Shaw shank Redemption during Brooks suicide.

The feet dangling, being a memorable scene for the audience which is what we hoped to do.

Makeup

For our final film we used makeup and fake blood to create a bruise/cut on Hayley's face, to make the injury look realistic. We also did this for her arm, when Dale (Damion) grabbed her arm, the camera got a shot of the mark he left, this being symbolism that she's in his memory. We didn't want there to be too much of a marking or a very long zoom on the cuts as it would make the movie more gory and this would generally be seen in a horror rather than a psychological thriller. Therefore we didn't want to confuse our audience.

A film that has similar makeup to ours would be The Call-

The simplicity of the cut giving a huge impact.

Editing, filming and research

List of “tricky” shots/edits/effects + Research into Filming/Editing Techniques

Tricky shots that we performed in our film involved a zoom or a trombone shot on Damion when he was thinking which we used to express his confusion and illness.

Our effects included overlays of colour such as a pink colour to represent the romance in the main characters relationship and a black and white colour to show the past. We included this in a sort of montage to show the flashbacks of his thoughts such as in this scene in Tangled

We used colour correction to fit the film together so that certain scenes matched up more if the colours were slightly off, i.e the asylum room scene, we changed the colour to lessen the blue as the props were too bright.

We used quite a few match on actions to show continuity editing.

As well as non copyrighted music, we searched for sounds that related to our films like fighting sounds.

Film poster

This is my practice film poster, I used an image from google as the background and then I'm going to re create this, by using a shower glass and some fake blood in order to make an originative poster design. The text is done in red and black as red relates to blood and anger where as black relates to darkness and death. The font type is broken, representing the characters relationships. I've included the main actors names and the small print saying who produced the film at the bottom, as these usually appear on film posters. I used the Warner Brothers logo in the bottom corner as we used this in our film trailer, to show which company would have made the film. I thought the background of the hand looked good as it related to Lily trying to escape from Damion due to her fear of him hurting her. I've included the release date under the title of the film, as the audience may be interested to watch the film.

The Forgotten Truth Rough Cut

Tricky shots in our film

These few scenes were difficult to film because of the fact Dale (Damion) had to knock the chair over and swing his legs as though he was hanging. We didn't want the sound of the chair being knocked over to appear in the footage and so had to cut as quickly as possible.

We used a trombone shot on this scene and couldn't quite get the camera to zoom in and out fast enough to give the desired effect. We were quite happy with the outcome but wished it looked like Damion was more confused in himself, considering he was mentally ill and didn't understand what was going on.

We used colour correction on final cut express on this scene to create a pink tint which symbolised romance. However the tint was too dark which made our film look slightly mismatched. We didn't want the colour to look too red, however decided that it created an angry/romantic effect. Meaning Damion was angry that the romance was now gone.

We used fast paced editing on this clip as we overlapped it with music that sounded like a loud, fast drum beat which would create an intense feeling for the audience. It was quite difficult to time the drum beat to the movement of the words but after much practice, we finally matched it up.

This scene was quite difficult to film as we initially wanted to make Damion's figure look like a silhouette, so you couldn't see who was killing Lily, leaving anticipation and excitement for the audience at the end. However we couldn't darken the lighting enough to hide Damion's identity completely. I think if we did it again, I would use a sort of Peep Show-esque technique and film from Damion's point of view killing Lily and perhaps put this at the beginning of the film so the audience don't suspect who's done it.

The scene where Damion was kicking the floor in front of the camera was frightening to film just in case he misplaced his foot, damaging the camera. The tripod appears in the background which we didn't realise at the time.

The flicker of the title was difficult to edit together as we had music over the top and wanted the beat of the music to match the title sequence requiring a lot of concentration. But also the effect took quite a while to create.

Radio Trailer Analysis

Here is the radio trailer for our film. We did this by chopping up sound from our film and putting in what parts we thought were most important, without giving too much away about the film. We then made a voice over to put over the top of it to inform the audience about the information they would need to be able to watch the film. The weakness of the trailer was the volume of the voice over, but I put it into some other software to increase the gain of the recording. Although, I now think the volume of the voice over is too loud and sounds a little distorted. To do the voice over we used the Zoom recorder. We first recorded the dialogue that we wanted and then I added some reverb to the recording to make it sound bigger and better. We then imported it into Final Cut so that we could mix it into the rest of the sound from the film. We then added fades and crossovers so that the sound wouldn't "pop or click" and would hopefully sound more natural.

Credits

Just as the opening title sequence, the ending credits have an impact on the film as it's the last thing you'll see. Therefore they must include several aspects:

Bold, memorable text
Thrilling music
Emotion/feeling as it concludes what happens in the film

The overall feel of the credits should match the feeling the audience gets from watching the film.

Remember me credits

These credits are an example, the emotive slow music carries on from the plot and ending of the film.

The text is usually white and plain on a black background to create a sense of ending and the film coming to a close. They don't need to be complicated as it's just the last thing the audience sees. Somtimes the background involves pictures from the film but as our film is a thriller, I feel it would be best to stick to a very plain background as it allows the audience to reflect on the film.

Then the film would have some basic information on the company and producer/director to finalise the end.

Overimages on films are common on credits

Over colours appear often also where the background is a certain colour rather than being an image

Radio Trailer Research

Above is a radio trailer for the season finale of Doctor Who. The trailer opens with sounds of the Tardis - a sound that every Doctor Who fan will instantly recognise, this is to draw the audience in. It then cuts to a separate voice actor who says "Original British drama on BBC1" This is again to connect with its target audience who are mainly British. After this the audience hears a medley of small snippets of dialogue from various characters in the episode. The trailer then finishes with the voice actor telling the audience the date and time of the show, while the theme tune plays in the background.

Because the audience are limited to just their hearing when listening to the radio, the trailer has to exploit the most important, memorable sounds of the show. They do this by included the sound effects from the Tardis and the theme tune. If this were a television advert they may not have included the theme tune, they may just have used a short clip from the episode because when the audience can see the characters they know its Doctor Who, Radio Listeners don't have that luxury.

While I couldn't find any radio trailers for films, I think this radio trailer is useful to take notes from. After listening to it, I think that we should incorporate music from our film into the radio trailer so that the audience can make a connection between the two, this will make it more recognisable and connect with our audience. It is also important to use a clear, memorable voice for the trailer. The voice used in the Doctor Who trailer is deep and loud and easily distinguishable from the sounds behind it. It is important that our voice actor has a voice that won't be drowned out by the background sounds.

Questionnaire Analysis

After creating a synopsis of our film (The Forgotten Truth) we decided to send out a questionnaire to our potential audience. By doing this we were able to see what parts of our idea the audience liked, which parts needed to be changed as they didn't make sense or were not liked and which parts were going to work really well.
These were the questions we asked and the answers that were given.
Questionnaire results
As you can see from the results in the table the age of the audience that answered the questionnaire range from16-18 year olds to people aged 26 and over.
Some of the audience believe that this film should be a certificate of a 12A and others believed it was more for people aged 15 and over due to the storyline. Most of the audience agreed that this film should be available on YouTube rather than at a cinema due to it being an independent movie.

Things needed in radio trailer

Dialogue  from film eg( I miss you I said I was going to find you and I am going find you I promise)
sound effects from film ( the slamming of the draws)
music from film
voiceover- (The forgotten truth staring Hayley Townend and Dale Cook)
These are the 4 main components of a radio trailer.
To make The Forgottens Truth radio trailer we will copy all the diagetic and non-diagetic sound from the actual film and cut it up into a short 30 second radio trailer. The trailer will have a voiceover on it to inform the potentail audience when and where they will be able to veiw the short film. The music that will be on the trailer will too be music from the actual film. By doing this is allows the audienece who have heard the radio trailer to be able to place the parts of the film that are on the trailer on the actual film and see how it all fits together to create an intense yet entertaining story.

Film certificate Update

Link to BBFC

We've decided that we may have to change our age rating to a 15 instead of a 12A as it contains strong violence when Damen is beating Lilly to death and there is also a disturbing scene where Damen hangs himself. Also there is some strong language. Also on the audience questionnaire, some of the results said that they'd would think that it'd be classed as a 15.

The film would be classed as a 15 if it has any of the following:
  • strong violence
  • frequent strong language (e.g. 'f***').
  • portrayals of sexual activity
  • strong verbal references to sex
  • sexual nudity
  • brief scenes of sexual violence or verbal references to sexual violence
  • discriminatory language or behaviour
  • drug taking

Example of radio trailers

This is an example of a radio trailer from Doctor Who Doctor who radio trailer.

The aspects of the trailer relate to doctor who as the sounds represent that genre e.g. tardis sound in background shows it's Doctor Who. The music sounds spacey which allows the audience to know they're listening to an advert about Doctor Who. It uses dialogue to show there are different situations happening in the tv show and discusses them in the trailer to entice the audience into watching it.

The fact that the audience can't see what's going on and can only hear it makes it more exciting because they only get a hint of what's happening.

Dialogue on the film trailer may include quotes from newspapers or film critiques in order to compare the film to others, which may encourage the listener to watch it as they could like the film it has been compared with. The rating usually appears with this as well.

Radio trailers include voice overs and the trailer would either have the main characters voice over the top or someone changing their voice to the overall genre and mood of the film. Such as a scarier film trailer would have a deep, frightening voice over.

Though I couldn't find many radio trailers on the internet as they're usually only featured in short bits on the radio, taking a film trailer and just listening to the sound and dialogue gives the same effect...
Terminator trailer

There isn't much of a voice over and more dialogue and diegetic sound however you can clearly see that gun noises, speech and the sounds of action as well as the voiceover explaining what the character is doing makes the audience intrigued to watch. The gun shots and action noises such as kicking open a door shows that the film is action based and a thriller. The deeper the voice over of a film makes it sound darker, showing the genre of the film. Our film would have a darker feel to it so we would use a deeper voice in the trailer. I also noticed the protagonist in the film isn't the one who's doing the voiceover. Using someone else as a voiceover would make the film seem less realistic and maybe more people would watch it as they could see it's not as scary.

Radio trailers

Radio trailers contain- Dialogue from film, sound effects from film, music from film, voice over.

Our radio trailer would contain dialogue from our film such as speech from Damion that shows he's looking for Lily and Lily's speech as he's looking for her. This gives the audience the basic story of the film without giving away what happens as it only hints.

The sound effects could include the fight noises such as punching and the groans/screams Lily makes as Damion beats her up. This shows a thrill to the audience, making them want to watch the film more.

The music from the film makes the film seem more realistic as it matches and promotes the film to the target audience as people who're slightly scared and intrigued by the trailer and music would be more likely to watch the film.

The voice over will be Damion's voice in the film as it describes his journey to find Lily and this creates a sense of reality in the film, as the audience could feel empathy for Damion's search and want to watch the film because they feel intrigued.

How does the radio trailer and poster work together to advertise the film?

The radio trailer and poster should both have the same genre in order to match. If the trailer features eeiry music like ours will due to it being a psychological thriller, the poster must have a scary theme, dark colours and a picture that relates to something that happens in the trailer. Such as Lily being beat up in a picture and the sound of it in a trailer.

My idea for the trailer would to start off with romance, dialogue that represents them being in love which then fades into the fighting and beginning to hate one another. This gives the audience a hint of what happens in the film, explaining that there's a problem in the relationship and something goes wrong. I wouldn't give away the fact he's in a mental asylum as it would be a twist when the audience actually see the film.

Radio trailers are a convenient way to hear about a new film which is why they must be catchy and to the point, tell you a main part of the film that doesn't give it all away and keep the audience listening. So at the end of the trailer there must be information about the film such as a release date etc.

Photo for the credits

I created this photo for the credits of our film. It is the original photo from the film. I decided to make the photo look dark and ghost like to make it seem sad and like the memories are over. I used Photoshop to do this. I blurred out the photo in to the background to show that the two characters are no longer alive.

Viral Adverts

Viral advertising is where adverts are made could be electronicly where they are put up on the internet on webpages or on videos etc. This saves money as you don't have to mass produce the advert, you would only have to make one that can then be put anywhere. Also, as the internet is used by a lot of the population it is easy for anyone to see the adverts. Or could be in the real world, where people would be able to see in physical form.

Top 10 films that had great viral marketing

Here is an example of a viral advert for the film 'District 9'. It is a poster at a bus stop. This advert has comedic elements to it and may make people then want to watch the film.

Here is a viral add for the film 'Prometheus'.
All of these viral adverts are created to promote certain products either by attracting new people or making the current audience watch the films again.

Editing Process of The Forgotten Truth

The Editing Process

Editing the forgotten truth has taken a long time as there has been lots of different scenes to be out in chronological order and then to be cut and placed in the right place. It has took a while as we have had to find lots of different effects to give the film the right mood feel at certain times. For example in one scene Lily and Damian are in a restaurant and they are very happy at this moment in time so we had to find an effect that would help to enforce this as there is no dialogue within this scene. The effect we have chosen has given the scene a pink tint as we believed that this helped to show the audience that they are in love.
It has taken a while to get all the rolls in the sound correct so that all the audio flows together well without it having any breaks or blips. Choosing and downloading the sound is taking a long time as if the sounds don't fit correctly with not only the images but with the story then the audience might not understand what is going on.

At the moment in time I have been experimenting trying to design a title that will flicker fast enough to be able to see the text and yet be able to read it. I have tried many ways and the one that has turned out most successful is by having normal unmoving text and cutting it up so that there is gaps between it. The gaps are only milliseconds so this means that the text flickers.  Also as a group we have decided to import our logo off our group poster onto the beginning of our film to link the two together.

The title sequence that is one the rough cut of our film took at long time to create as, I had to cut apart simple bits of text and a line them to fit perfectly on screen together before copying and pasting them about 10 times. I did this and then separated the grouped bits of text by a few milliseconds. This gave the text a flickering effect which is now what is on the film.

Example radio trailers

Harry Potter Radio Trailer
This radio trailer consist of the sound from the film that allows the audience to be able to identify which scene it is from in the film (if they have already seen the film). It starts with the main score / theme song which in todays society people will associate with harry potter. However, this is a very unusual radio trailer as it has Randy Thom talking about how some of the sound effects in the film were made.

Doctor Who Radio Trailer
This is a radio trailer showing advertising the new doctor who. `Faces` is a reference to the fact that it is now a new actor who is playing the doctor and it is also part of the TV programme as the doctor has been reborn `regenerated`. This trailer starts with the theme song of the start up for the doctor who TV programme, this hooks the audience as they will be well aware of the fact it is a doctor who trailer as it is a very well known programme and has been around for a number of years.

Country Nights Radio/TV trailer
This radio trailer is advertising a programme called Country Nights. The trailer is engaging and has a lot of dialogue on it to inform the audience about the programme. The trailer tells the audience when it will be shown on TV and on which channels, it also specifies that the programme will be played on BBC Radio 2. It has a happy and yet catchy tune in the background that is more than likely associated with the programme itself. This helps the audience to link sounds/songs with different programmes so that when one of the songs is heard the audience will know exactly which film/TV programme it is from.

BBC iPlayer Radio Trailer
This radio trailer is also used as a TV advert, it has all the information about the app/website it is advertising. It is upbeat and made entertainable  so that the audience is kept engaged through out the advert. The dialogue informs the audience about the new app and how to find it. As the trailer is in simple terms and has bits from real radio programmes on it , it will draw the audience in.

Analasis of online questionnaire results

Synopsis/Summary-
The film starts off with a man, Damian looking at a photo of a woman who is his wife, Lily (its a wedding photo).
There are small flashbacks of Damian and Lily together, talking and embracing.
He then says he will find her and she isn't forgotten. The film then switches to a vision of the woman speaking to the man saying all is not lost and that she isn't far away.
Same scene of his wife getting beaten up from earlier but you see that it's him doing it.
Damian then sets off in search of his wife by walking down a corridor, following shadowy figures with her back turned to him then the screen darkens. (then the screen comes back to a different location in his mind) his wife is not there. But there are fast flickers of her presence, that go into her being beaten up and killed. But you don't see who it is.
Damian then follows Lily into a room and goes through the door where he sees Lily and she's stood next to Doctor, he looks at the table and sees a file. There are snippets of information saying that he killed his wife and he's got bipolar/schizophrenia.
Damian never left the mental home and it goes back to reality. He goes under his bed and pull out a knife. Close up Knife on shot then goes off shot and comes back on covered in blood, to show he has stabbed himself.
Damian is dead, blood on his hand that goes onto the photo of Lily and then the audience sees a tear of blood run down Damian's face and onto the face of his wife on the photo.

  • What genre do you think this film is? All of the responses said that  they think that it would be a psychological thriller, which is what genre we was hoping to make our film to be. This is a good response as we know we have set the right atmosphere for the film.

  • What certificate/age rating do you think the film would be? 50% of the responses said they thought that it would be rated at a 12A, and the other 50% said that they'd rate it as a 15. We were planning on making our film to be rated as a 12A, But we will have to research what would be included in a 15 and see if our film fits those specifications.

  • Would you watch our film? 85% of people said that they would watch our film. We thought that this was a good response as it is a hight percentage.

  • Do you think the story line is easy to follow? 85% of the responses said that they found our storyline easy to follow. This is good feedback as we were worried that our storyline was too complex and hard to understand.

  • What do you like about it?
We are happy with this feedback as there is a range of different thing that people like about our film and not just one thing.
  • What kind of music would be played on the film?
This is exactly the type of music that we would play in the film. This is a good response as the audience understand what type of atmosphere the film will have and what sort of things to expect.

  • Where would you expect to see this film? The majority of responses said that they think that they'd find it on YouTube which is what we were expecting seen as it is a short film.

Location Photos

Mental home: Room

For this location we wanted to clearly show that Damen was unwell. We thought that we could do this by putting him waking up in a hospital like room. This would introduce his character to the audience as knowing that there was/is something up with him, but they won't know what exactly. We found a medical room in our college which we thought would be the best place to make this scene as the room was all white and clean just like a hospital room.

Park Memory Scene:

For this location we wanted it to look like it was a romantic/ happy place as it was going to be a memory of the two character before Damen killed Lilly. This was to show that they did love each other before Damen became mentally ill. We found a little park across the road from our college which we thought would be a perfect location to create a happy memory in.

Cafe Memory Scene:

For this location we wanted a little cafe, to again show that Damen and Lilly used to have fun together before he turned mentally ill. We found a cafe that was joined to our college which was a good place to film as it was quiet and was able to film everything quickly and easily. Whilst it also was the perfect atmosphere for our film.

Hall ways:

We needed some locations where Damen was chasing Lilly as he thought he kept seeing her. But he wouldn't be able to get close to her, which would make it seem more like it is in his head. We found some good corridors that had plain while walls which would make it look more like the corridors of  a mental home. I think that in the second photo the lighting makes the atmosphere look quite strange, which makes it seem like something is wrong.

Corridor Memory Argument Scene:

For this location we just needed a place where Damen could remember an argument him and Lilly had, to show that their time together got more violent as time passed. We found this location and thought it would be a good place to film as the walls are close together, which I think gives off an uneasy and could make the audience feel claustrophobia. Also it could then make the audience focus on the two characters more. Also the lighting here leaves a few shadows which could make the scene seem more tense.

Mental Home: File Room

For this location we needed a room where Damen could look through a filing cabinet to find out why he was in the mental home. We found a little room in our college with a filing cabinet and a couple of desks, which was good so that we could make it look like an office.

Home: Death Scene

For this scene we needed a place where it would be believable for Damen to kill Lilly. So we thought that their house would be a suitable place as he may not have lost his temper in public or someone could have stopped him. This location was also a good place for Lilly to get murdered as it looks like an average every day house, which could make the audience feel like the same thing could happen to them.
