Analysis of final film questionnaire results

As 100% of people answered yes for liking our short film and understand it, we felt content to go forward with this short film and not edit any more into it, at risk of changing their opinions

We then asked what age rating they would give our film, these were the responses

As most said 15, we felt we had reached our target audience.

We asked what they would rate our film and the majority said 4/5 and 5/5, giving us a good idea that our film was well represented to its target audience.

Finally we asked if there was anything we could improve on and we received the feedback that there could have been more conversations which we would try to improve on in the future.

Final film questionnaire results - Analysis

Here are the questionnaire results for our finished film. Here, the age range is a little wider, which will help us more as there is more variety of answers.

We again asked our audience if they understood our film and 100% of them said yes. Which means that hopefully the voiceover that we added improved the clarity of the storyline. Now that we know that the storyline makes sense now all we have to focus on is that the audience get the thrill our of the film that we were hoping to achieve.

When we asked the audience if they like our final film 100% of them said yes. This is good as it could mean that it appeals to a large range of audience. Also, we are happy with this as it shows that our storyline was interesting and intriguing in some way for them to like it.

We asked the audience what they thought the age rating would be for our final film and this time we got the answers that we were expecting. 73% of the audience said that they would rate it at a 15 which is what we had done. This means that we put in the right amount of content for a 15 film and that it may make it more thrilling for the audience to watch.

This time we asked the audience what they would rate our film out of 5 (5 being good and 1 being not so good). 73% of the audience said that they would rate our film 5 out of 5. Which we were very happy with as no one rated it below 4.

Film Poster changes

Here is the final film poster that I have made. I have changed a few things that I thought would improve the overall look of the poster. Firstly I changed the font for the credits part of the poster to 'steel tongs' as this it what all other film posters use. I thought that this would make out poster look more professional and appealing. I then spread out the text at the bottom half of the page so that the layout would look more proportional. I then looked at other film posters and saw the the production logos at the bottom of the poster were a lot small so I made mine smaller too so that they wouldn't stand out as much. I then added a review to the poster which could entice the audience and assure them that other people who have watched it have said it is good. And finally, I blended the main image into the background more so that it all looks like one image, I thought that this pulled the whole image together and made it look less like the image was just placed on top. I  have also added the film certificate to the bottom left of the page so that the audience can see how old you would have to be to see/ purchase the film.

Analysis of our final film

This is our final finished film called 'The Forgotten Truth'. Since the rough cut of our film we have changed a few things to hopefully improve the overall product. For the memory scene in the cafe with Damian and Lily we have changed it so that the filter over the top of it is black and white. We have done this so that it matches all of the other memory scenes. This will make more sense to the audience as they will be able to see that they are all memories and will make the film more continuous. We also added a voiceover over the top of the film so that the film would make more sense to the audience. Also, in my opinion I think that it pulls the whole film together and will create more sympathy towards the characters. We have also cut down the fighting scene to make rhythm of it faster to create more of a thrill and make it more intense. Throughout the film we have also tidied up the editing of most of the scenes so that there are no irrelevant shots or parts that are too long.

Ideas For Viral Ad

After looking at several viral ad campaigns during my research I have complied two ideas which may work well as viral ads for our film.

My first idea was that seeing as I'm studying at college I would print out an A4 poster/flyer with the phrase "DO YOU REMEMBER?" and below this the url to our film on YouTube. The "DO YOU REMEMBER" part is in reference to the title of our film's name "The Forgotten Truth" and its taglin "Remember". The phrase itself is thought provoking which will tempt the curiosity of the audience.
Here is the poster:

My Second idea was to share this image, or just a direct link to our film on social media. While this idea is not very original, it is a proven strategy to generate viewership on media products.

Voiceover example

We needed a voice over in order for our film to make more sense to the audience. As our story line is quite complex and similar to Shutter island (which makes the plot slightly confusing) we decided that by having a voice over added to our short film, in Damion's voice it would create an easier story to follow.

This short film includes a voice over which discusses his time with his former lover, which would be similar to ours as our main character is looking for his girlfriend and narrates this throughout.

Voice overs could include:
  • The main characters voice narrating what's happening during the film
  • The main characters thoughts
  • A mention of the film title eg-The Forgotten Truth
  • A mention of where the setting is to give the audience a clue to where the main character is speaking from
  • What the main characters aim is/what he's looking for in the film
  • A realisation at the end, as he discovers what's happened

Film logo

Possible film logo:

I created this using paint as a simple logo that could be used for our film. The film logo includes our production name HVRD which is our groups initials and a film symbol as the logo to represent what we create so that our audience know who's made the film.

This logo is known world wide for its simple image structure and bold font to represent which production company made the film.

How to advertise our film

We could use a scrolling banner on a website in order to advertise our film, this banner could appear on a film website, Youtube or something that an audience suitable for our film would visit.

This is an example of what it would look like:

We could use a website for our film which fans could look for release dates of new films from our production and find character profiles etc if they enjoy the film.

I created a website layout to show this, it includes a star review which would encourage people to watch our film. As well as the poster and direct link to the film so it's easily accessible to our audience and a banner and film poster for further advertisement. The website would include a characters page so our audience could access information about the characters in case intrigued and a contact page so that they could find out more information about our other future films.

Viral ad strategy

Warner Brothers used viral ad campaigns by promoting the film using the method of selling the game that relates to the film, creating a website that fans could find out info about the film on and merchandising to advertise.

"The campaign started with some teasers followed by campaign for the district attorney of Gotham City in which Harvey Dent was contesting.

The introduction of The Joker followed quickly, and from then on, the participants were engaged in games and scavenger hunts through clues and were also rewarded from time to time, not only materially, but also in the form of posters, teaser trailers, memorabilia, participation in the events related to the movie, and finally tickets to the movie. These activities helped in sustaining the interest of the audience in the movie and also in the ARG.

The ARG was highly successful and helped in establishing connection between the previous Batman movie, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. The campaign ended from where the film took off. The success of any ARG is measured through user content and the Dark Knight ARG resulted in thousands of blog posts, Google searches, websites and participants. The success of ARG translated into the success of the film, and it went on to become one of the few films to gross over US$ 1 billion in box office collections."

The company set up a marketing campaign started by a fictional file being posted on The Dark Knight rises website with a warrant for the arrest of Batman, after taking the fall for Harvey Dent in the film. Also by creating a fake newspaper Gotham Times in order to sell the film, this was featured online. The website included this to gain fans and give the satisfaction to other fans of getting a sneak peak into the film. A sort of 'scavenger hunt' was used on the website, where pieces of documents were shown and fans had to find clues to where in America the film was set. Then graffiti of the Batman logo around America was placed so fans could take pictures near it bringing a sense of reality to the fictional film.

As well as posters, trailers, newspaper and the website, merchandise was used to advertise the film as fast food restaurants e.g. burger king created a meal named The dark whopper and included a free Batman toy, making kids everywhere happy and ready for the film to come out. A lot of films use merchandise as a marketing strategy as Mcdonalds are known for selling happy meals with toys from film such as Toy Story.

Viral Ad Research

Viral ads are ads that advertise films in unconventional ways. The most common strategy used with viral ads is the internet. Viral ads on the internet can generate mass coverage and popularity. Film companies use this as a creative way to advertise their upcoming releases. The advantage of using the internet is that using conventional posters and Television adverts, the ads are stationary and can only be seen if you are in close proximity to the poster (eg. in a town centre) or a television set. By using the internet, the ads for the film can be seen by anyone who has an internet connection. This is beneficial because in the modern age, most western countries have a large population with smart phones that have mobile internet. Internet ad campaigns are also very effective at attracting the younger generation as they are the ones who use the internet the most for recreational purposes. Viral advertising is also useful because its cheap. You only have to make one copy of a digital poster or one video/trailer and then all you have to do is post it online, printing massive amounts of posters is expensive, and smaller independent companies can use this to advertise their films to a wider audience. Another advantage is that once you put something on the internet, you never have to take it down so ad will stay there forever, which cold attract viewers years after the films release.

Here is the viral ad for the low-budget film Devil's Due which has gained over 50 million views:

Viral ads aren't just used on the internet though, here is district 9's use of clever posters saying "Humans Only" around major cities:

Here is a link to the article which contains these two examples and more successful viral ad campaigns:

Locations/setting

We based our setting in our home town, Barnsley as we felt it would bring in a niche audience of locals who are interested in psychological thrillers.

We used college corridors which made our film look less profession but we felt it gave the effect we wanted as mental institutes probably have signs etc in to show visitors where to go. The white hallways looked similar to the setting we wanted to portray, giving a very dull depressing feel.

We used a park outside college in order to show a happy memory from Damion and Lily's relationship.

Using college campus again, we used the restaurant in the social area to give an effect of a romantic happy memory, showing love and familiarity between characters.

The hospital room in college was used to create a setting of mental illness, it was very similar to an actual hospital bed as this room was used for childcare students. We were happy to use this room to represent Damion in the asylum.

We used a music room to film the file scene as it included a lot of file drawers, making it easier for us to include props without very much hassle.

We used Hayley's kitchen to show a homely scene, expressing the characters were in a comfortable place.

Rough Cut Analysis Feedback

After asking the audience whether the storyline made sense to them, 100% said that they did. This was a relief because we were worried that the storyline might be too complex to make sense in such a short film, but after these results we were pleased.
When asked if they liked the audio in the film, only one person said that they didn't. Again this was a good result however, with that one person making up 20% of the participants, we may think about improving the audio because of the small number of people who answered our question on this occasion.
The most alarming results we got were the responses for the age rating. 60% of the participants said that they thought the film was a 12, and only one person said that it was a 15. This came as a surprise to us because we had raised the age rating to a 15 due to the violence in the film. We think that we will have to make changes to the film in order to raise the age rating of the film.
When asked where they would expect to see the film, 60% said Netflix. While this is not what we expected, Netflix is still an internet based service, this was a positive shift from the questionnaire results from the synopsis as a lot of people thought the film was to be seen in a cinema. While the audience still didn't say that they thought the film would be seen on YouTube, it is a step in the right direction.

Location Photos

Hospitalisation room:

We need a location where Damian will be staying in in the mental institute. This needs to be clear to the audience that it is not his home bedroom and that he is being held there as he is mentally ill. The audience will then find this out later in the film and it will make more sense to them. We want this room to be plain, and look like a hospital room.

We have found a room in our college that looks like a hospital room. The walls are plain and white and it will give the audience the impression that Damian is somehow unwell.

Corridor scene/s:

We need a place where it shows that Damian is going looking for Lily when he thinks he can see her. We need it to be an inside location so that he can chase her into the file room, this is when he finds out what he has done.

We have found some good corridors in our college that have plain white walls and still give the impression that he is inside a mental institute.

We thought that the lighting for the long corridor was good for our film as it looks a bit shadowy and makes it look more intense when Damian it chasing after Lily.
We took down the signs around the places that se were filming to make the scene look more realistic and more like a mental institute.

Memory Park Scene:

We need a location where Damian can have a flash back of him and Lily to show that he is remembering her, and remembering that they used to have good times together. This scene needs to show the audience what their relationship was like before Damian was put inside a mental institute,

We found a small park over the road from our college which we though had the right atmosphere for our film. It included clear paths for them to walk down & some benches that we we able to film them having a good time with each other.

We also thought this scene would be good for the memory scene as there is a lot of shadows from the trees so it could make the scene look more mysterious as shadows can be conventions of psychological thrillers.

Lily's death scene:

For this scene we need somewhere for Damian to beat up Lily. We need this to be a private place so that it would look more realistic for if it would really happen in real life. We think that by using somewhere that looks like the characters home it will emphasise the fact that they did used to be happy together as they had a house together. We thought that it would be good if there were a lot of things such as memorabilia around the house so that the audience can see that they have made good memories together and to show how close they were before Damian started to turn mentally ill.

File Room Scene:

For the 'File room scene' we needed a place that looked official but also didn't look too posh. We found a room in our college that looked like it could be situated in a mental institute. We wanted this to be the place where Damian finds out that he has killed Lily and that's why he is in there. This room had a filing cabinet and some desks in which could be good for our film as it looks basic and minimal as the mental institute wouldn't pay out for expensive, modern technology. We could then use the filing cabinet for when Damian find his file for the institute.

Cafe Memory Scene:

For this scene we need a place where Damian and Lily can have a nice memory together before Damian turned mentally ill. We found this cafe/restaurant in our college that looked like a good place for them to have a meal together in the film as a flashback. The lighting in here is bright with yellowy/ orange tints to it, which would be good for the atmosphere as it could make it look more homely and romantic.

Adverts

Film companies can market their films on websites, internet etc in order to get a wider audience and appeal to a vast amount of people. It increases brand awareness and product sales as more people see the ads.

This Better Call Saul ad is featured on a website to advertise the show on a different platform.

Though this isn't a film viral ad, the xbox ad featured on this IMDb website advertises to convince people to buy and play the game.

This advertisement on Youtube shows the popular iPad air on a vast platform as the creators know it will be seen by everyone who visits youtube and convince them to buy it.

This ad is featured on Facebook as it's an important message from the NHS which will have a great audience which is what the aim is.

Methods used by viral ads:
  • Internet and blogs
  • Mobiles
  • TV and Radio
  • Direct marketing

As people on the internet share content between one another, the viral ad companies must make their ads appealing, accessible, worth sharing, large platforms such as Youtube used to market, good quality and easy to share.

Characters

We decided to call our main character Damion.

The American meaning of the name Damion is: Tame. This is very ironic to our film as the character goes against everything the word tame represents.

I've found that if a film is good, it represents a deeper meaning to the audience. This can make aspects of a movie noticeable if the audience didn't see them before such as a characters name having a more in depth meaning.

This can be seen in other films such as Hunger Games as Katniss is a plant translated from Latin as 'archer' meaning her role in the film is very accurate...

Whereas Lily is a name that means a flower and purity. This translates in our film due to her kind nature being taken for granted by Damion who kills her.

Locations used

Locations

The locations we used in the forgotten truth were mainly inside the same building.
Park scene

The park that we used for the 1st memory scene was opposite college . We chose this location as it was easy for all members of the group to get to and was fit for the purpose. For example, this scene is in the film to show one of Damian and Lily's happy moments in the period of their relationship. The location was good as we were able to get a range of different shots and use the props (benches) that were already in the park to our advantage.

Hospital Room scene + death scene

This scene was filmed in colleges nursing room that health and social students use. We though that this location was fitting for what we wanted to do. We made sure that when filming in this location we didn't have any of the tables and chairs that were in that room on screen. It was tricky to film in this room as we had to Position the camera in the right places. We used the same location to film the scene where Damian kills himself we used the rail that is attacked to the celling to hang the main character

File Room

This scene was filmed in one of the music class rooms in college as, we needed an empty space with a filing cabinet in it to use as a prop. We used this specific room as the room looked a little clinical and a bit like an office with the computer and files lying around. This room helped to add emotion to this dramatic scene as the lighting is bright and sterile looking.

Corridor 1

we used this corridor/ room as it meant that the audience was able to see that there are other rooms surrounding the room that Damian enters. We left it up to the audiences imagination to think about what or who could be in one of theses rooms.

Corridor 2

we used this corridor as It had points which looked dark and unable to reach. We did this to try and make it seem like Damian was trying to get to Lily and yet never seemed to get closer and by the end when they reach the film room he has reached her.

Stairs

We used these stairs as they are not the main stairs that people use at college, this made them safe to use as we wouldn't be in the way of hundreds of people. Also, the landing at the top of these stairs meant that we could position the camera anywhere and still get a good clean shot.

Trick Edits/effects

Here we had to research how to make our shots a different colour so that we could show the audience that they were just memories of Damian and not real. We found that we could put a filter over the top of the shot to have the colour that we wanted. Also the fact that the scene would be black and white could suggest to the audience that Lily is dead as black has connotations of death.

Here we wanted to show the audience that it was a romantic, happy scene so we thought that a pink filter would make it seem more romantic. We did this by putting a colour correction filter over the top of the shot and they gradually changed to levels of the colours the get the exact shade that we wanted.

In these shots we wanted to increase the rhythm of the scene so that the news that Damian found out would appear as more shocking. We did this by taking shots of the filing cabinet at several different angles and then edited them together at a fast pace. We then got the sounds from the draw slamming and edited them inbetween each other so make it sound more intense and shocking. We also thought that it would make Damian seem like an angrier, more out of control character. Which would make him look more intimidating to the audience.

We got close up shots of the file that Damian found explaining why he was in the mental institute. We did this to also show the audience why he was in their and what he had done to Lily. This was difficult to edit together as we had to make sure the audience had enough time to read it, but also it had to have a quick rhythm to it to make it look more shocking. We found a sound track that sounded like some drums which we though went well with these shots as the atmosphere suddenly changed and hopefully the audience will have a moment of realisation of what Damian has done.

In this scene we had to edit together the shots of Damian beating up Lily. This was hard to do as we had to make sure that every punch/ kick matched in the next shot. We sped up some of the punching shots when Damian was hitting Lily's face to make it look more realistic and brutal. For the sound effects of this we found the sounds online. We cut them all up and added them into the shots for every punch. This was difficult as we had to get the sound effects to precisely to match up the punching and kicking. For the final cut of our film we are going to record our own sound effect as we don't think that the ones we found sound realistic enough. We also wanted to show different parts of this scene in two different places of the film, one where you weren't able to see Damian's face as he was a silhouette, and then in the second one the audience would find out that it was him beating up his wife. But when we tried to edit it that way the film didn't make as much sense in our opinion, so we decided to cut the first scene out.

For the title of our film we wanted it to flicker to created a more tense feeling. This was hard to do as we wanted to different flickers to be uneven. So we had to create a lot of separate titles and adjust them to how long we wanted them to show for. This then caused problems when we wanted to edit the font of alter of of the titles, we would have to redo the whole section.
