The lighting seen in Psychological thrillers is most commonly dark, gloomy imagery, almost appearing grey or foggy on screen.
Here we can see this technique in Shutter Island, the colours seem bland and faded, if this film was a romance or drama, the purple flower in the bottom left of the image would 'pop out' and shine brightly, it this image we see it look dark, almost like it's dying. This technique is used to convey the sense of hopelessness and fear associated with films of this type, the images on screen need to reflect the tone and themes of the film's story.
Similar patterns emerge in the film The Sixth Sense. Here we see the character 'Cole' in bed in the hospital, the blanket that is covering him is pink, and in a different genre this would be much brighter and 'warmer', the images on screen really emanate the intended emotions; fear, mystery, sadness.
We will look to incorporate this technique into our film with it being comparable to these two examples, the lighting will really amplify the emotions we need to convey; Damian's desperation and confusion in search for his wife.
