Genre Research - Mise En Scene

Here I will look at the Mise En Scene in Thriller films.

Costume.
In thriller films, the costume worn by the main protagonists tend to be suits or smart dress. This is done to portray the them as intelligent and likeable, in conventional thriller films the main characters are designed to be liked and respected by the audience, they will be more likely to achieve this with smart and purposeful appearance. Here are two images, one from Inception starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Leonardo DiCaprio, and the other from Taken starring Liam Neeson. Liam Neeson's character is wearing a shirt and tie and in the image from Inception both characters are wearing suits.

Props and Setting.

Common props in thriller films are guns and knives, due to their violent nature. Guns symbolise danger and it is rare that a character in a thriller film isn't waving a gun around at some point in the film. Thrillers are set in realistic, everyday surroundings. This is used as a device to relate to the audience as they are familiar with the images on screen, yet it adds to the shock value of the film as it disturbs the norm and reminds the audience just how fragile society is.
