Genre- Psychological thriller

The film must involve suspense between the characters, tension, cliff hangers at the end and danger of some sort. It leaves the audience questioning what has happened rather than putting the answer straight in front of them.

Features often involved in thriller/horror films would be...

Characters: Innocent victims, psychotic character like the ones in Psycho

  • The music must be thrilling/scary to keep the audience on the edge of their seat.

  • Slow pace of film to highlight something's going wrong-eg psycho where the killer stabs the woman and it shows you her death slowly

  • Lighting to create shadows
Instead of showing the death of someone by murder, we could interpret their death by the use of shadow such as a shadow of a knife on a wall similar to this scene where a figure is seen instead of showing who it actually is.
  • Dark lighting/black and white theme in scenes to create a sense of mystery

  • Some fast paced shots to make everything seem like its happening quicker, this could be included in fighting scenes such as in kill bill above.
  • The characters all having a point of view in the film would make the suspense vaster as they don't know what one another is thinking but the audience does like on peep show

  • Settings like the woods or a closed off place to scare

  • Psychological factors- such as things happening in the film that are realistic and so leaves an audience wondering if it could happen to them, my idea would be similar to this as the characters getting kidnapped/lead off by a seemingly innocent man happens in reality such as http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-27647549

  • Universal fear of death and the unknown

  • Problems that need solving
  • Danger

  • Darkness as everyone believes it's dangerous to be out alone during night

A movie with this genre that would be similar to my idea would be Hard Candy

as the main character Hayley Stark meets up with a photographer who she met over the internet and the whole psychological value of this is the fact she pretends to not know he's a child molester and continues to trick him into thinking she's naive when infact she's going to make him admit what he's done and tell the police. This storyline would be similar to my idea as the character of the old man would attempt to trick the girl characters into thinking he's innocent and only wants their help, the stereotypes are vital as who would think a weak elderly male is capable of killing or kidnapping? The girl characters in my idea are similar to the photographer in Hard Candy as they have no idea what's in store for them and they're naive enough to believe a stranger.
